History of Art
This series of paper casts of a female torso with icons of art history painted onto their surfaces is a humorous attempt at feminist appropriation of male-attribued images.
The work exists in a variety of forms, including photographic grids. History of Art has been reproduced on the cover of The Female Body: Figures, Styles, Speculations published by the University of Michigan Press (1991), and Heresies magazine (1989). The B&W version that appeared in Heresies was included in the exhibition, "Documenting a Feminist Past: Art World Critique," at the Museum of Modern Art in 2007.
Blaise Tobia was a collaborator on this series.
